One page, many products
Amazon variation mixing is what happens when a single product page holds several versions of an item and pools their reviews underneath. Most of the time that is a convenience: one page for every colour of the same shoe, with a rating built from everybody who bought any of them.
It becomes a problem when the versions are not really the same product, because the rating then describes something other than what you are about to buy. And it becomes a deliberate problem when a seller adds an unrelated item as a variation of an established listing so that it inherits a review history on day one.

What gets grouped, and why
A parent listing can hold child variations along several axes at once: size, colour, capacity, pack count, style, and sometimes condition. Each child has its own identifier and its own price, and the page shows you one of them at a time.
The grouping exists for good reasons. It keeps a product family on one page, it concentrates the review history rather than splitting it across a dozen near-identical listings, and it makes choosing a size straightforward.
The cost is that the headline rating is an average across everything beneath it. The 4.6 above a specific colour may have been earned mostly by a different colour, by the two-pack rather than the single, or by last year's revision of the same model that has since been quietly replaced under the same parent.
For an identical product in five colours that averaging is harmless. For a product family where one variant is good and another is not, it hides exactly the thing you needed.
Where the grouping is genuinely misleading
Four cases, in rough order of how often they cost someone money.
The revised model under the old parent. A manufacturer changes a component and the listing keeps its history. Reviews from two years ago describe a product that no longer ships, and they still count toward the average.
The pack-size mismatch. A single unit and a six-pack under one parent. Reviews complaining about value are about a different purchase from the one you are making, and reviews praising value may be too.
Condition mixed with new. Where renewed or used sits as a variation, the rating blends two populations with genuinely different failure rates.
The unrelated addition. A phone case listing that acquires a hair dryer. This one is against the platform's rules and it still happens, because the payoff is a mature review history attached to a new product on its first day.
The first three are ordinary structure being used normally. Only the fourth is abuse, and it is the easiest of the four to spot.
The ten-second check
Before trusting any rating on a page with variations:
Select the exact variation you intend to buy. Size, colour, capacity, pack count, condition. Everything below changes meaning depending on this.
Read the five most recent reviews shown for that selection. Not the most helpful, which surfaces old enthusiastic ones. The most recent describe what is shipping now.
Ask whether they are about your item. If they describe a different size, a different colour or a different product entirely, the number above them is not about what you are buying.
That is the whole check. It costs less time than reading one review carefully and it catches all four cases above.
A supporting habit for anything expensive: note the identifier of the exact variation rather than the page. Sharing a URL shares whatever variation was selected, plus tracking parameters and search context, and the identifier is the part that is unambiguous. It affects the price history too
The same problem shows up in price data and is less visible there, because a chart looks authoritative whatever it is measuring.
A tracked line that mixes a single unit with a four-pack, or new stock with refurbished, produces a shape that means nothing at all. The lows are the cheap variant, the highs are the expensive one, and the band in between describes no purchase anybody could make.
So pin the configuration before reading any history, exactly as you would before reading a rating. A tracker that cannot tell you which variation it followed deserves more caution than anything the line is doing, and a sudden step in a chart with no product news behind it is frequently a variation change rather than a price change.

Why sellers do it
Understanding the incentive makes the pattern predictable rather than arbitrary.
A new listing starts with nothing: no reviews, no ranking history, no sales record. Everything that decides whether a product gets seen depends on data it does not have yet, which is a genuinely hard problem for anyone launching something honestly.
Attaching a new product to an established parent solves that in one step. The rating, the review count and part of the ranking signal transfer immediately, and the listing starts where it would otherwise take a year to reach.
Two softer versions of the same incentive are worth recognising, because they are common and mostly legitimate. A manufacturer revising a product keeps the parent rather than starting again, which preserves genuine history and also carries reviews of the old version forward. And a seller adding a new colour or size to an existing family is doing exactly what the feature is for.
The line between those and abuse is whether the thing added is the same product. Reviews describing a different item are the evidence, and that is why reading a few beats any structural check.
What it means for reading reviews generally
Variation mixing is one member of a family of problems that all have the same shape: the rating is real, and it is about a different sample than you assumed.
Incentivised reviews filter the sample toward the satisfied. Pooled variations broaden it past your item. A revised product carries its predecessor's reviews. In every case nothing was fabricated and the number still does not mean what it appears to.
Which is why the useful skill is reading the shape of a review history rather than its average, and it is the same skill in each case: look at when the reviews arrived, what they describe, and whether the product they describe is the one in front of you. The practical summary is one line. Select your exact variation, read five recent reviews under it, and confirm they describe the thing you are buying. Anything the parent listing says above that selection is an average over products you may have no interest in.
And if a listing makes that hard, which some deliberately do by hiding the variation selector behind a dropdown or by showing a different image than the selected option, treat the difficulty itself as information. A product family with nothing to hide makes the selection obvious.
