It identifies a listing, not a product
What is an ASIN has a short answer and a more useful long one. The short answer: a ten-character identifier Amazon assigns to a listing.
The long one is the distinction that matters. It identifies a listing on Amazon rather than a product in the world, and almost everything worth knowing about what the number is good for follows from that. It is excellent for saying precisely which page you mean, and it says nothing at all about whether the same thing is sold anywhere else.

Where to find it
Two places, and the second is the reliable one.
In the URL, after /dp/. Ten characters, usually starting with B for products listed by sellers.
In the product details table further down the page, where it is labelled directly.
On a listing with variations, each configuration has its own identifier, so the one you want is whichever is showing while your size, colour or pack count is selected. This is the part people miss, and it is why copying the identifier from the details table after selecting is more reliable than taking it from a URL you arrived at.
Books carry their ISBN as the identifier rather than a generated one, which is the one case where the number means something outside Amazon.
What one identifier does and does not cover
Both directions of the relationship are looser than they appear.
One product, several identifiers. The same physical item carries different ones in different countries. It also carries a separate one for each pack size, and frequently separate ones created by different sellers who listed the same product independently rather than joining the existing page. A popular item can have a canonical listing and several duplicates.
One identifier, several products. A parent listing groups variations beneath it, each with its own child identifier, and the parent's identifier refers to the family. Worse, a listing can change what it sells over time while keeping its identifier and its review history, which is why an identifier is a stable reference to a page rather than to a thing.
The practical consequence: an identifier tells you exactly which page and configuration you mean, on Amazon, today. It does not guarantee that page has always sold the same product, and it cannot be used to ask whether something is available elsewhere.
What it is genuinely good for
Three jobs, and it is the best available tool for all three.
Checking a price history. A tracker needs to know precisely which configuration it is following, and the identifier is the unambiguous way to say so. A history built against a URL can silently span variations. Why that matters is set out in Amazon variation mixing.
Sharing a specific item. Better than a URL, which carries tracking parameters, search context, and whichever variation happened to be selected when the link was copied. Ten characters transfer without any of that.
Returning to the exact thing later. Searching the identifier goes straight to the listing, which is more reliable than a bookmark on a page whose URL may change.
For those, use it rather than a link. It is shorter, it is cleaner, and it is precise.
Why a store-neutral identity matters
This is the part that is about how a catalogue should be built rather than about shopping technique, and it is the reason the distinction at the top is not pedantry.
If a product catalogue uses a retailer's identifier as the product's identity, then the product cannot exist without that retailer. Adding a second retailer means either duplicating every product or inventing a mapping after the fact, and the mapping is exactly the hard part.
So TickClip gives a product its own identifier that belongs to no retailer, and the ASIN hangs off it as one of the ways that product appears in the world. Today the only retailer covered is Amazon, which makes the distinction look academic. It stops looking academic the first time a second retailer is added, because nothing about the catalogue has to be rebuilt.
The same logic explains what the identifier cannot answer. Asking whether a product on one retailer is the same product on another is a question about equivalence, and equivalence has to be established from identifiers that exist across retailers, from manufacturer part numbers, or from the product itself. An Amazon identifier is not evidence about anything outside Amazon.
Related identifiers, and which travel
Several other numbers appear on a listing, and they differ in one important respect: whether they mean anything outside the retailer.
ISBN identifies a book edition and is issued by an external authority. It travels everywhere, which is why books are the one category where cross-retailer comparison is trivially exact.
UPC, EAN and GTIN are barcode identifiers assigned to a product by its manufacturer. They travel, and they are the closest thing to a universal product identity in general merchandise. Where a listing publishes one, that is the number to use for comparing across retailers.
MPN, the manufacturer part number, also travels, and is frequently more precise than a barcode because it distinguishes configurations that share one.
The retailer's own identifier, of which an ASIN is one example, does not travel by design.
The practical upshot: for anything on one retailer, use their identifier. For anything spanning retailers, find the barcode or the part number in the product details table. Most listings publish at least one, and it is usually further down the page than people look.
When listings merge, split or get repurposed
Identifiers are stable, but the pages behind them are not, and three changes happen often enough to plan around.
A merge. Two listings for the same product are combined, and one identifier becomes a redirect to the other. Reviews and history usually consolidate, which is fine, and occasionally the surviving page is the one with the less accurate description.
A split. A variation family is broken up, and configurations that shared a parent become separate listings. A price history built against the old parent now covers something narrower than it did.
A repurpose. The riskiest case. A listing that sold one product is edited to sell a different one, keeping the identifier, the ranking and, crucially, the reviews. A five-year-old page with four thousand reviews can be describing a product that has existed for a month.
The defence is cheap. Where a review history matters to the decision, read a handful of the oldest reviews and check they describe the thing on the page. The one-line version
An ASIN is the precise way to say which Amazon listing and configuration you mean. Use it for price history, for sharing, and for returning to a specific item.
Do not use it as proof that two things are the same product, and do not assume a listing has always sold what it sells now. Both of those are questions the number was never designed to answer, and treating it as though it does is the only real mistake available here.
