The sheet is partly an advertisement
Learning how to read product specifications starts with accepting what the sheet is. It is not a neutral description. Manufacturers publish the numbers that flatter their product and omit the ones that do not, so a longer table is not a better product, it is a product with more favourable numbers available.
That does not make specifications useless. It makes them evidence with a known bias, which is a workable thing as long as you read them accordingly: three or four rows matter, the rest are tiebreakers, and the omissions are frequently the most informative part.
This sits inside the wider question of whether something is worth buying, and it is the skill that makes the comparison quick rather than exhausting.
Separate criteria from tiebreakers
The single most useful filter: for each number you are about to compare, ask what it would change about your day.
If you can answer in a sentence, it is a criterion. If you cannot, it is a tiebreaker, and treating a tiebreaker as a criterion is how comparisons end up decided by something irrelevant.
That filter usually reduces twenty rows to three or four, and at that point the comparison becomes possible rather than exhausting. It also resists the two most common failures.
Counting features rather than weighing them. Twelve modes against eight is not a reason to prefer anything if you will use two. Feature counts are the easiest specification to inflate and the least connected to outcome.
Precision mistaken for accuracy. A number quoted to three decimal places is not more true than one quoted to a single figure, and a difference below what you could perceive is not a difference at all. Quoted precision is a presentation choice.
The habit that makes this concrete is writing down the two or three things that would genuinely make you unhappy with the purchase before opening either listing. That list is your criteria, and everything else on the sheet is negotiating with it. The full version is in how to compare two products.
Numbers measured differently are not comparable
The quiet problem with specification tables is that identical labels frequently describe different tests.
Battery life is quoted under a usage profile the maker chose. Brightness may be peak or sustained. Noise is measured at a distance and in conditions. Range assumes an environment. Capacity may be nominal or usable. Speed may be burst or continuous. In every case two manufacturers can publish honest numbers that are not comparable, because they measured different things.
Three defences.
Prefer standardised figures where a standard exists. Energy labels, safety ratings and certified measurements are comparable by construction, which is the whole reason they exist.
Read the footnote. Where the test conditions are published, they usually explain a surprising gap in one line.
Trust independent measurement over published figures when the difference matters. For anything where the number is the reason you are buying, someone has usually measured it in comparable conditions.
What the omissions tell you
A specification table lists what is present, so an absence is a decision rather than an oversight.
When a number is standard in a category and missing from one listing, that is more informative than most of the numbers that are there. Weight missing from a portable product. Noise missing from an appliance. Battery capacity missing from anything cordless. Material missing from anything structural.
Two related tells. Ranges quoted as "up to", which is a maximum under ideal conditions and tells you nothing about typical. And figures given only as comparisons, such as "40% quieter", where the baseline is unstated and frequently the maker's own previous product.
The useful response is not suspicion, it is a question. If the omitted number matters for your use, it has to come from somewhere else: a manual, a regulatory listing, a review that measured it, or the manufacturer's support pages, which are frequently more candid than the marketing ones.
Invented names, and how to handle them
Proprietary feature names sit between marketing and specification, and they need translating.
The test is whether the name can be explained in one sentence about what it does. If it can, use the explanation and ignore the name. If it cannot, treat the feature as absent, because a capability nobody can describe is not one you can compare or rely on.
A name given to a common feature is usually a way of making comparison harder, and recognising that saves time. A name given to something genuinely distinctive still has to survive the same sentence test.
This matters most in categories where several listings are the same factory product under different brands, because the specification tables there frequently match word for word including the same errors, which is the clearest evidence available of what you are actually looking at. The numbers worth knowing by category
A few figures do more work than the rest, and they are consistent enough to memorise.
Anything cordless: capacity in watt-hours rather than milliamp-hours, because milliamp-hours are not comparable across different voltages and are quoted precisely because they sound larger.
Anything that heats or cools: power draw and the rated capacity together. One without the other describes half the machine.
Anything structural or load-bearing: the rated load and the material, plus whether the rating is static or dynamic. The difference is substantial and rarely highlighted.
Anything you carry: weight, and dimensions in all three axes. Weight is the specification most often omitted from portable products and most often regretted.
Anything with a screen: resolution and sustained brightness, not peak. Peak figures describe a small area for a short time.
Anything with a warranty tier: which components are covered for how long, because a headline period frequently applies to one part and a much shorter one to everything else.
In each case the question is the same one from earlier: what would this number change about your day? These are simply the rows where the answer is usually yes.
A working order
Five steps, in sequence, and most comparisons resolve by step three.
Write down what would make you unhappy, before opening anything. Find those two or three numbers on each sheet and compare only those. Check whether they were measured comparably. Look at what is missing on each side. Then, and only then, let the remaining rows break a tie.
At that point the sheet has done its job, which is narrower than it appears: it tells you what a product is, not whether it is any good. That second question comes from the review record, the price against its own history, and how long the thing is likely to last, none of which appear in a specification table at all.
One caution to end on. A specification sheet is at its most persuasive when you are choosing between two products that are close, which is exactly when the numbers are least likely to separate them. If three or four criteria have not produced a winner, more rows will not either, and the decision has moved to the things the sheet does not contain: who stands behind the product, what it costs to be wrong about it, and where the price sits against its own history.
